Barbados offers something for every flavour of traveller. Why Visit Barbados?

Barbados is a top destination for travellers who love tropical beaches, island culture, and exciting adventures.

Some of the top reasons to visit include:

  • World-Class Beaches: Barbados is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From the submerged shipwrecks and turtles of Carlisle Bay to the secluded palm-fringed beaches and sugar-soft sands of Haywood Beach.
  • Year-Round Sunshine: Located in the southeast of the Caribbean, the warm, sunny climate makes Barbados a great destination at any time of year.
  • A Water Sports Paradise: With hundreds of shipwrecks, a wealth of marine life and superb east coast surf, Barbados offers world-class snorkelling, Scuba diving, surfing, and paddle boarding.
  • Cultural Richness: As the Birthplace of both Rum and Grapefruits, Barbados has a deep-rooted and fascinating history. From the historic plantation houses to the lively festivals, Barbados has a captivating history to explore.
  • Gastronomic Delights: Sample delicious Bajan cuisine, including flying fish and cou-cou, fish cakes, and rum punch.
  • Subterranean Wonders  – Unique amongst the Caribbean islands, Barbados is not volcanic, created instead through an ancient tectonic uplift. This created a network of stunning underground caves such as Harrison Cave and the mysterious Animal Flower Cave.

When is the Best Time to Visit Barbados?

Barbados enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures all year round, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences:

  • High Season (December to April): The most popular time of year for tourists from the UK, US and Canada seeking winter sunshine. The weather is at its best with minimal rain and lots of sunshine. However, this is also when accommodation prices are at their highest.
  • Shoulder Season (May to June): Enjoy fewer crowds, pleasant weather, and lower prices.
  • Off-Season (July to November): This is the rainy season, but showers are typically brief and followed by sunshine. It’s also hurricane season, though Barbados is usually not heavily impacted owing to being the easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles, of the Caribbean.

Pro Tip: For a unique Bajan experience, plan your visit during Crop Over, a vibrant annual festival dating back to the 1780s that celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest – the Crop Over celebration. (Usually between July and early August).

How to Get to Barbados

Barbados is well-connected by flights, with direct flights to over 30+ international destinations, making it easy to reach.

  • Flights: Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is the sole international airport in Barbados and has direct flights to major UK, US & Canadian cities such as London, New York, Toronto, and Miami. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and American Airlines all frequently service the island.
  • Cruise: Barbados is a popular cruise ship stop in the Caribbean, with 376 cruise ships arriving in Bridgetown the capital of Barbados is a popular Cruise Ship in 2023.
  • Visas: Travellers from my nationalities – including those from the USA, Canada, UK, and EU, do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. However, always check with your government’s travel requirements before departure.

Pro tip: For passport stamp hunters, the Barbados government no longer stamps passports on-arrival for those eligible for visas on arrival. This is disappointing for anyone who collects destination passport stamps.

How to Get Around in Barbados?

To reach the full potential of your time on the island, rent a car. A car in Barbados gives you the freedom and flexibility to go where you want when you want.

Barbados has an extensive and reliable bus network, both public and private. However, for flexibility and convenience, I highly recommend a rental car is recommended.

  • Government-run buses: Large buses painted blue with striped yellow sides, run frequently along every major route in both rural and urban areas. The fair is usually around $3.50 BD. Timetables can be found here.
  • Private buses: Operate island-wide and are all painted yellow-painted with blue stripes, commonly using ACME buses (like in Looney Tunes).
  • ZR vans: Painted white with maroon stripes are also readily available and patrol every possible main route.
  • Taxis: Available island-wide, a local directory can be found here.

Travel Tips for Your Barbados Adventure

To make the most of your trip to Barbados, keep these practical tips in mind:

  • Currency: The Barbadian Dollar (BBD) is the local currency, though US dollars are widely accepted.
  • Language: English is the official language, so communication is easy for most travellers.
  • Transportation: Renting a car is the best way to explore the island, but be aware that driving is on the left side of the road. Alternatively, public buses are an affordable and fun way to travel.
  • Navigation: Do not rely too heavily on Google Maps when driving on the island, I found frequent discrepancies with directions and road layouts.
  • Safety: Barbados is generally safe, but it’s still wise to use common travel precautions—don’t leave valuables unattended on the beach and avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas.
